First: Selection a problem • The counselor must select the most important problem on which to focus the treatment process. • Include the client’s opinion on the most significant issue to work on is of extreme importance. This will serve as a motivating factor for the client’s involvement. Second Step: Define the Problem • The pattern of the symptom must match the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual). This manual serves as a model for your own personal written statement Third Step: Develop treatment goals • Include Long term and short term goal with positive outcome Fourth Step: Construct Objective • Objectives must indicate the behavior you want to change, lesson, or eliminate (it must be measurable). Consider the objectives as a list of steps toward attaining the long term goal. • Each problem should have at least two objectives Fifth Step: Intervention and Creation • The intervention phase of the treatment plan is where the counselor includes the “action” that is design to help the client attain the written objective. I cannot stress enough how important it is to choose intervention based on the needs of the client, as well as the importance of using a variety of approaches. These include cognitive behavioral approaches, family-oriented approaches, behavioral approaches, solution focused therapy to name a few. You can also assigned book for the client to read. (Bibliotheraphy). Sixth Step: Diagnosis Determination • Determining the appropriate diagnosis rests with the client’s complete clinical presentation. The therapist must evaluate the behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal symptoms that the patient present to the criteria for diagnosis of mental illness conditions as descried in the DSM-IV. Summary Tailor each treatment plan to the specific need of each client. The clients’ strength and weaknesses, and distinctive presenting problems, social network, family situations, and presenting symptom patterns must be considered in the development of the treatment plan. Counselors must use their own judgment when writing treatment plan.
